While most water system do not demand much attention, there will be a time when it will need to be serviced. We recommend a yearly checkup even if things seem to be working properly (see the Maintenance tab). Then, of course, there may be a time when your system fails without warning (hopefully you are not in the shower with soap in your hair-it happens!).
As always, when working with electricity, be careful and call a professional (us) first! If things are not done properly, there is potential for injury to yourself and your pump system.
No Water:
Make sure the well pump breaker is in the on position. If the pump does not turn on, go to 2
Press the reset buttons on your control box if it is 1 ½ HP or above.
Call us for further phone assistance or to report the need for an emergency service call.
Low Pressure:
See if pressure gauge is reading in normal range (most systems should be between 40 and 60 PSI)
If the pressure is only low in the house, check and clean faucet screens.
Check for leaks in plumbing under the house, at the pressure tank, and in the waterline (look for wet spots on the ground). If a leak is found call us for repair.
Pump Running Continuously/Cycling Frequently:
Make sure all faucets and spigots are shut off.
Make sure the toilets are not running continuously.
Check for leaks in plumbing under the house, at the pressure tank, and in the waterline (look for wet spots on the ground). If a leak is found call us for repair.
Tap on the side of your pressure tank to see if it is full of water. The tank should be no more than 1/3 full. The bladder in the tank may have ruptured causing the tank to fill and the pump to turn on and off rapidly. Your tank needs to be replaced. Turn off the breaker to avoid burning up the pump, and call us to schedule a tank replacement.
If the tank is good, but the pump is still running continuously or too frequently, turn off the breaker to avoid burning up the pump, and call us for assistance.
Leak/Broken Pipe
If the problem is causing the pump to cycle frequently, turn off the breaker to the pump to avoid wearing out the pump.
Call us for repair.
High Electrical Bill:
Reasons for increased use of electricity can be: leaks, waterlogged tanks, worn pump, damaged equipment. See “Pump Running Continuously/Cycling Frequently” section above to see if that is the problem.
Call us to explore the possibility of upgrading your system to a constant pressure system to save you money on your electricity bill.
Dirty Water:
If your well has been disturbed recently, you may need to wait some time to let the sediment settle. If the water is still dirty, try running the water for a bit to expel the dirty water from the lines.
You may be pulling water and sediment up from the bottom of your well. The pump may be raised if there is enough water in your well. Call us to see if that is a possibility.
See the Service category; Water Treatment/Filtration for information on a sediment filter, or call for more information.
Retain a sample of the dirty water for testing.
